Your Major Choice Not "Always" Decide Your Job

Your Major Choice Not "Always" Decide Your Job

There is a statement that says “I want to choose that major because the job opportunities are wide”. Career is closely related to education (Ruslan, 2012), where in general, adolescents are more interested in subjects that will later be useful in their chosen field of work (Al-Mighwar, 2006). Majoring is the initial process to approach the field of work that has been desired by the student. Thus, choosing the right major is important and influential for our lives in the future. But nobody knows what we will become in the future. The job that you will pursue after graduation will not necessarily be the same as what you learn in college, but the most important thing is the ability to learn quickly and continue to adapt to the environment.

Our ability to learn quickly, in the sense that we are able to follow the lecture process, will be very necessary. The goal is that we could follow the learning process to the fullest. This helps us achieve success in learning in the classroom (Apps, 1990). For example, we choose a major that matches our interests and talents, so we could focus more and not feel burdened. Because if we do something we like, we will be more motivated to study that major. For example, if we like English, we will indirectly try to explore and master it. If you have mastered it, there must be many ways to achieve goals and careers in the future.

In addition to having the ability to learn quickly, we must also be able to adapt to the campus environment. According to Katharine S Adams & Briley E Proctor (2010), “The first few years of the college experience may be the most difficult for students in terms of adapting to their new environment and its demands”. More or less, the campus is a miniature community environment. An open attitude to a new environment will make it easier for us to adjust. Plus, several institutions on campus reflect institutions in society. Examples are student executive bodies etc. We could participate in these institutions. In addition to adding relationships, it also adds experience. Our activeness in adding experience in the campus environment could be a useful provision when entering the world of work.

Despite those things, there are still many people who think that if they want to easily get a job, they choose a certain major. This is not entirely true. Because this couldn’t be a guarantee that one day we will easily get the job we want. Do not just because a major has broad job prospects, we force you to choose it while you are not able to follow it. For example, many graduates majoring in mathematics become engineers, then we are forced to choose mathematics majors. However, we have difficulties in this area. This could result in us having difficulty following the flow of lectures which could then affect our grades. What’s more, there is no guarantee that after we graduate we will get a job that matches the prospects of the major we choose.

It is important to choose a major that has broad job prospects. This could make it easier for us to get a job when we graduate. However, it is also necessary to pay attention to our ability to follow the lecture process and our ability to adapt to the majors and campus environment. In addition, there is also no guarantee that we will work in accordance with the job prospects of the majors we take. But the most important thing is our sincerity in learning and our willingness to develop ourselves. By becoming a competent person, there will be many ways to achieve success in the future.
