MotoGP vs Superbike

MotoGP and Superbike are sporting events featuring motorcycle racing as a competition.  MotoGP itself was first held in 1949 which was originally called the GP500, while Superbike started in 1988. At first, the two events stood alone before in 2013 they were under the auspices of DORNA Sports (Sport.Detik.com), and are currently the most popular two-wheeled race. Even though they are both the most prestigious racing events in the world, MotoGP and Superbike have differences in terms of motorbikes, engines, and budgets.

Although at first glance the MotoGP and Superbike motorbikes look the same, in reality the two motorbikes are different. The motorbikes used for the MotoGP championship are prototype motorbikes specifically designed for racing. In other words, MotoGP motorbikes are the best motorbikes that a manufacturer can produce. On the other hand, Superbike motorbikes are production-based motorbikes that are modified according to the competition's regulations used for racing (Dorna WorldSBK). Apart from that, another difference is that MotoGP motorbikes are not generally sold, while superbike motorbikes are available to buy in motorbike shops. So in other words, the difference is that Superbikes are production bikes and can be purchased, while MotoGP bikes are purpose-built race machines or prototypes and cannot be purchased.

Current MotoGP and superbikes both limit the use of no more than 1000 cc, with an inline 4-cylinder or V4 configuration. Even so, the power generated and the way the engine is produced are very different. MotoGP machines are capable of producing between 250-300hp with a top speed record recorded at 363.6 km per hour by Jorge Martin at the Mugello circuit, in Italy. As a comparison, the Superbike engine produces between 200-250hp with a top speed record by Chaz Davies, 330 km per hour at the Phillip Island circuit, Australia. In addition, the method of production of the two machines is also different. Prototype engines are of course made specifically to provide great power, while production-based engines are only modified to provide more power. Judging from the power generated and the top speed record, it is clear that the two have different engines.

Another difference is in terms of budget.  MotoGP certainly has a bigger budget than Superbike. As previously mentioned, the MotoGP motorbike is a prototype motorbike, and its development requires a large budget. Reporting to onestopracing.com it takes about 35 million dollars to run a team of two racers. These costs include the bike, the riders, staff, travel, hospitality, R&D, and other needs. Although these costs may increase if something happens, such as crashes and fines. Compared to MotoGP, Superbike has a limited budget. Serafino Foti, Aruba.it Racing - Ducati Team Manager, spoke that there are maximum limits that can be practiced on the race bike. The needs themselves are not much different from MotoGP, but indeed the budget provided is limited. This is the different, MotoGP has an unlimited budget while Superbike is limited.

At first glance, even though they are both racing events, MotoGP and Superbike have differences. The most basic difference is in terms of motorbikes, engines and budget. Even so, the aim of these two events is the same, that is to show racing sports competitions using the best designed motorbikes.
